When I wrote the above, I did not expect three years later to be able to see exactly what happens at 130,000 frames per second (fps) video,
with the help of a $100,000 Vision Research Phantom v1610 video camera on YouTube!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe-f4gokRBs&feature=youtu.be What you can see is that the fracture starts at the tail and travels down the piece, this is 154 seconds into the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=xe-f4gokRBs#t=154s The video then goes on to derive the Failure Front (explosion) at ONE MILE PER SECOND (equivalent to 3,600 mph!) Video created at Orbix Hot Glass in Alabama. https://orbixhotglass.com/ Awesome camera http://www.visionresearch.com/Products/High-Speed-Cameras/v1610/ http://www.visionresearch.com/uploads/Docs/Products/DS_WEB-v1210-v1610.pdf |
